ADHD Q & A

What is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that causes problems paying attention and controlling impulsive behaviors. People with ADHD may have a hard time sitting still and constantly find themselves interrupting others. These symptoms can interfere with performance at work and school as well as personal relationships.

Although symptoms of ADHD most often emerge in childhood, this condition may persist through adolescence and adulthood. Dr. Ziyar works with patients of all ages to control their ADHD symptoms and lead happy productive lives.

What are symptoms of ADHD?

ADHD causes symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Many of these symptoms are normal on occasion, but people with ADHD have trouble controlling these behaviors and demonstrate them frequently for six months or longer.

Symptoms of inattention include:

  • Being distracted easily
  • Growing bored with a task quickly
  • Difficulty completing tasks
  • Trouble completing or handing in homework
  • Not listening when spoken to
  • Difficulty following directions
  • Losing personal items
  • Daydreaming
  • Forgetfulness

Signs of hyperactivity and impulsivity include:

  • Fidgeting, squirming, or foot tapping
  • Difficulty waiting or taking turns
  • Acting without regard for consequences
  • Interrupting others
  • Blurting out answers
  • Trouble sitting still
  • Excessive talking
  • Restlessness

Children who demonstrate six or more symptoms or adults who show five or more from each category for at least six months may have ADHD. However, Dr. Ziyar provides an official diagnosis after he performs a comprehensive evaluation of you or your child.

How is ADHD treated?

Treatment for ADHD is a cooperative effort between the patient, family, and any teachers or coaches involved in your child’s daily life. Dr. Ziyar uses a biopsychosocial model that carefully considers the biological, psychological, and social factors that influence disorders like ADHD.

He encourages patients to actively participate in their own treatment, which typically includes a combination of psychotherapy and medication. When ADHD affects your child, Dr. Ziyar may also recommend assistance through their school. Similarly, adults may find it helpful to implement special accommodations to make it easier to focus at work.
